Listen to the Corresponding Podcast Episode:
Today, I want to delve into a topic that might ruffle a few feathers. It’s about limiting your exposure to the endless stream of podcasts, social media, courses, and ads that bombard us daily. These distractions, while sometimes valuable, can often pull us away from the meaningful work we’re meant to do. I’m excited to share some personal insights and tips on how to cut through the noise and focus on what truly matters.
First off, I promise I’m not here to tell you to give up what you love. Think of it like when someone goes to a nutritionist and hears they need to cut out wine, sugar, or start working out five days a week. As my ten-year-old might say, “Why does everything that’s healthy taste so bad?” I’m not about that life. I believe you’re the only one who can decide what’s right for you. Ignore anyone who insists it has to be their way or the highway.
How to Focus Your Energy
Recently, I saw a post from a former coach of mine who seemed to dismiss the value of feminine energy in favor of more masculine traits like discipline and focus. But it’s not about choosing one over the other; it’s about balance. We need both energies to thrive. Similarly, it’s not about eliminating distractions completely but about focusing your energy like a magnifying glass with the sun. That’s how transformation happens.
A couple of years ago, I was consuming an overwhelming amount of content—podcasts, courses, etc. I’d listen to one or two podcasts a day. On top of that, I’d grab every shiny new ad or course that promised quick success. This led to constant spinning and a lack of clear direction. My clients and I often say, #StoptheSpin. It’s a real issue.
But here’s the good news: you can still indulge in your love for learning and consuming content. The key is to do it with focus. Now, I’m much more selective about what I allow into my mind. I repeat valuable content multiple times until it really sinks in. Bob Proctor’s method of sticking with a few pages of a book until it’s ingrained in your DNA resonated with me. Instead of rushing to the next thing, I concentrate and study deeply.
For example, I’m currently pursuing several certifications in Human Design for Business. I listen to lectures multiple times to grasp every nuance. I’ve cut out other podcasts and courses to focus solely on this area. The result? Deeper understanding and more profound insights.
On the business side, I’ve realized I don’t need more strategies. The answers are within me. Now, I study myself and align my business practices with my strengths and design. I’ve significantly reduced social media scrolling and other distractions.
